Empedocles, the ancient philosopher, is positioned between the threatening depth of the volcano, the chaotic elements and the knowledge of the gods. The legend has it that he threw himself down the volcano.
In Hölderlin's 'Death of Empedocles' he never commits this 'Falling', keeps a fragile balance.
